Financial Assistance

Help with medical bills

You can seek medical bill assistance for care at OHSU or our OHSU Health partners, Hillsboro Medical Center and Adventist Health Portland.

If you can, it’s best to apply for financial assistance before you get care.

You can also apply:

  • Within 240 days (eight months) of getting the first bill for the care you want assistance for
  • Within 12 months of paying for that care

    Who qualifies for financial assistance

If you qualify, you’ll get free or discounted care for up to 12 months. You can apply again if you need more care. If you apply and are turned down, you can appeal.

We consider these factors in offering financial assistance: income, health insurance and type of care provided.

Before July 1, 2024, you may qualify for financial assistance if you live in Oregon or southern Washington. As of July 1, 2024, you may qualify if you live in any U.S. state.

    Income

You may qualify for financial assistance if your family’s annual income is up to four times the federal poverty level.

    If your household income is:

    • Up to three times the poverty level: You qualify for free care.
    • Between three and four times the poverty level: You qualify for a 65% discount.

      Health insurance

You may qualify for financial assistance if you don’t have insurance or have insurance that doesn’t fully cover your needs.

We don’t offer financial assistance if you:

      • Have insurance and choose not to use it
      • Have insurance that doesn’t cover our services because your insurer doesn’t have a contract with us or doesn’t authorize our services

        Type of care

You may qualify for financial assistance if you get:

        • Emergency care
        • Medically necessary care, or care that you need to keep your health from getting worse. This can include evaluation, diagnosis or treatment.

Medically necessary care does not include:

          Medical assistance resources

You may apply for financial assistance after going through screening for any medical assistance resources you may be able to use.
