Cosmetic After Care Instructions
Proper after-care can reduce pain and maximize the positive effects of your treatment. Please view the treatment categories below to learn about after care instructions and tips for your procedure.
- Expect some swelling at the injection site for 1 hour.
- Ice can be applied to reduce swelling.
- Bruising may occur.
- It usually takes one (1) week to see the effects of Botox.
- Botox relaxes the treated area. Botox may not completely paralyze the treated muscles and deeper wrinkles will still be present.
- Treatment needs to be repeated every three to four (3-4) months.
- Do not rub, scratch or put pressure on laser treated area for 48 hours.
- The treatment areas may become swollen, especially around the eyes.
- Apply ice 10 minutes every hour for the first day then intermittently if swelling persists.
- You may bathe or shower. Avoid cream or make up for two (2) days.
- Avoid rubbing the treated areas.
- You must be very cautious with sun exposure and use SPF 30 or greater sunscreens.
- It can take up to six (6) weeks to see improvement after the treatment.
What to expect:
- If you are prescribed an antiviral and/or antibiotic medications, start taking them on the morning before the procedure. Finish all medications as prescribed.
- After the laser, your skin could begin to swell, ooze, and crust. Mild crusting might be noticeable one to five (1-5) days following treatment. Crusts will disappear naturally in several days. Do not pick at the crusts.
- Keep your skin clean.
After care:
- Apply intermittent ice packs to the treatment sites, 20 minutes at a time, as needed for comfort & to reduce swelling. Frozen peas or crushed ice in a baggie work well. The eye and mouth area are especially susceptible to swelling.
- Sleeping propped up on pillows will also help with swelling.
- Avoid harsh topical products or alcohol based toners for two weeks. Otherwise, after 24 hours you can resume your normal skin care regimen.
- Avoid tretinoin/RetinA during treatment regimen.
Other instructions:
- Avoid vigorous activity or excess heat for at least one week.
- Use strict sun protection for one (1) month following procedure.
- You can schedule treatments 6-12 weeks apart.
- Best results are generally achieved with two (2) to four (4) treatments.
After care for brown spots:
- When treated with the IPL, the spots will turn darker and come to the surface over 5 to 7 days then peel off. Do not pick at the spots and ice.
- When treated with the pigment laser, there may be some superficial crusting. Apply petrolatum ointment for the first 2 to 3 days until this subsides. The spots will become darker and peel off over 5 to 7 days.
- It usually takes more than one treatment to clear the brown spots.
After care for tattoos:
- Apply petrolatum ointment to treated site twice daily for 1 week.
- If necessary, cover the site with a non-stick dressing such as Telfa, to avoid rubbing from clothing.
- There may be blistering and superficial crusting. Do not pick at the spots or pop blisters.
- The pigment will have been shattered by the laser light and will be absorbed by your body over the next 4-6 weeks. Multiple treatments will be necessary.
- You may notice some swelling and redness around the hair follicle for one to two (1-2) days post treatment.
- It is normal for the treated hair to grow after the treatment.
- Over the treatment course, the number and the caliber of the hairs will diminish.
- Expect at least five (5) treatment sessions.
- The treated area will be red and flushed for up to 24 hours with some swelling.
- Ice and sleep propped up.
- Some of the blood vessels may appear slightly bruised.
- In some cases such as port-wine stains and flushing, the treatment involves intentionally causing intense bruising for the best results. The bruising will last 7 to 14 days.
- In usually takes more than two- three treatments to clear blood vessels.
Fillers: Restylane, Collagen, Radiesse
- The correction is immediate and initially may be appear overcorrected because of the anesthesia and swelling. This usually resolves in 24 hours.
- Apply ice, 10 minutes every hour for the first day.
- Fillers provide volume to specific areas. Not all wrinkles, especially superficial ones will improve.
- Fillers are temporary and subsequent treatments will be necessary depending on the duration of the filler. Sometimes, a touch up treatment is needed at 1 to 2 months.
- If you feel any lumpiness after a week gently massage the area.
Fillers: Sculptra
- There will be significant swelling for the first 2 days from the water that used to dilute the Sculptra.
- The effect of the Sculptra is not immediate but is gradual taking 4 to 6 weeks to stimulate your own collagen.
- Apply ice, 10 minutes every hour for the first day.
- Massage with moisturizer for 5 minutes, 5 times a day for 5 days.
- You will typically need 3 sessions.
- Bruising, redness and/or swelling are common and will resolve in 7-10 days.
- Ice and sleep propped up.
- Mineral make-up may be applied immediately following treatment.
- Treated pigment will turn darker (brown to black) within 24-48 hours.
- Do not pick at treated areas, as this will most likely cause scarring.
- Dry areas should be kept hydrated with a moisturizer recommended to you by your aesthetician.
- Treated pigment will slough off the face in approximately 1 week. Do not pick at the pigment! This may cause bleeding, scabbing and possible scarring.
- Avoid sun exposure and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen recommended by your clinician.
- Avoid heat, saunas, hot tubs and sweaty activity until skin is completely healed.
- Avoid products containing any exfoliating agents (retinoic acid, tretinoin, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, astringents, etc.) for 7 days after treatment.
- Do not use an electric or manual facial brush of any kind (i.e. Clarisonic or something of the like) for 7 days after your treatment.
- You may resume your regular skin care routine typically 7 days after your treatment.
