Comments:
Measurement of CEA has been shown to be clinically relevant in the management of patients with colorectal, breast, lung, prostatic, pancreatic, and ovarian carcinomas. Smokers may have slightly elevated levels of CEA. The CEA assay value, regardless of level, should not be interpreted as evidence for the presence or absence of malignant disease and is not recommended for use as a screening procedure to detect the presence of cancer in the general population.

Specimen Requirements:
12 mL urine in a sterile container.
Room temperature (21 to 25 degrees C), stable up to 2 hours.

Refrigerate (2 to 8 degrees C), stable up to 12 hours.
Reference Range:
Negative for nitrites and leukocyte esterase.
Comments:
The lab will perform a dipstick test and if the nitrites and/or the leukocyte esterase is positive, a urine culture will be ordered and resulted. If the dipstick is negative, no culture is ordered. Gram negative bacteria that most frequently cause urinary tract infections will reduce nitrates to nitrites, thereby giving a positive screen. Other significant infections should cause a positive leukocyte esterase due to the presence of WBCs. If ordered, the culture will be performed at Kaiser Regional Lab.
