What makes us different
National recognition: We’ve earned the National Cancer Institute’s top designation for leadership in research.
World-class care: We’re home to groundbreaking cancer discoveries. Dr. Brian Druker helped pioneer Gleevec, a pill that turned an aggressive type of leukemia into a manageable disease. That paved a path to precision medicine, in which therapies target a cancer’s specific traits while mostly sparing healthy cells.
Early detection: Cancer is most treatable when found early. Our Cancer Early Detection Advanced Research Center is leading an effort to detect cancer earlier, bringing together some of the world’s brightest minds in cancer research.
Support services: We provide a full range of services, from acupuncture to emotional support, to help you and your family.
Top minds together
Many specialists: Our lung cancer team includes specialists in surgery, pulmonary medicine, critical care, radiation oncology, medical oncology, nuclear medicine, nursing and others. They all work together to give you the best care possible.
Tumor board meetings: Our lung cancer experts meet three times each month to discuss cases together. They make sure that you benefit from the full team’s expertise. Doctors look at scans and test results patient by patient, then go over treatment recommendations as a group.
Quick response: Beginning treatment as soon as possible is important with lung cancer. Our team system and tumor board meetings enable us to make a diagnosis and agree on treatment recommendations quickly.
Expertise: Nearly all our doctors are fellowship-trained, meaning they completed at least a year of advanced training after their residency. In addition, our surgeons offer exceptional skill in minimally invasive surgery. You have less pain and a faster recovery.
Research and innovations
Molecular testing: We use new technologies to identify traits in your tumor to help us develop the most effective treatment plan. This also helps us look for clinical trials.
Clinical trials: The Knight Cancer Institute is involved in hundreds of clinical trials, including for lung cancer, to find better ways to detect and treat cancer.
Technology: We target tumors with the latest technology, including 3D imaging and the Portland area’s only Novalis Tx radiosurgery system.
Minimally invasive surgery: Options include video-assisted and robotic surgeries for smaller incisions, less pain and faster recovery.
Immunotherapies: Our leading-edge therapies come with fewer side effects than more traditional cancer medications.
Research: At OHSU, Oregon’s only academic health center, providers are also researchers pursuing discoveries in the lab. Our experts have published hundreds of research papers on findings related to lung cancer.
