About me
Dr. Christopher Chien is an advanced heart failure and transplant cardiologist with over a decade of experience. He has worked in both academic and community-based centers to improve the care of patients along the spectrum of heart failure severity. His areas of clinical expertise include general heart failure management, cardiogenic shock, acute and long-term mechanical circulatory support and cardiac transplantation.
In addition to clinical care, Dr. Chien has received formal training in clinical research and is academically active, with a particular focus on device therapy for heart failure, remote patient monitoring, mobile health and implementation science. He has expertise and interest in how remote monitoring sensor data can be used to improve the care of patients with heart failure before they get ill enough to require hospitalization. He also believes that strong collaborations between academic medical centers and community practice are critical to improve the care of patients throughout the state of Oregon and beyond.
Dr. Chien believes in the importance of developing strong relationships with patients that allow him to understand their motivations, needs, goals and values. While heart failure is a chronic condition, he strives to put heart failure into remission so patients can have the best quality of life possible. Dr. Chien also enjoys working at an institution that has advanced options for treatment of heart disease (such as heart transplantation and left ventricular assist devices), when standard therapies are not sufficient. He considers the relationship with his patients to be a continuous, lifelong bond that deepens over time. He also enjoys being at the cutting edge of new therapies for heart failure and believes that we should continue to strive to develop innovations that make life easier and better for patients.
Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, world travel, cooking, basketball (playing and watching) and being outdoors.
