Dustin Carlson is an assistant professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). His path to anesthesia was circuitous. After graduating from Arizona State University in 2003, he wrote and performed music for five years. His time as a musician provided the opportunity to work alongside an aid organization serving under resourced communities in Brazil. Dr. Carlson’s time in Brazil proved to be an inflection point on his life’s course. Over the subsequent 11 year period he completed his premedical studies at Columbia University in New York City followed by medical school and residency training at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia with the goal of participating in surgical missions in developing countries. He was excited for the opportunity to join the faculty at OHSU in 2019 and to share in the hospital's commitment to serving those in need. Dr. Carlson's academic interests include resident education, point of care ultrasound, anesthesia for liver transplantation, and global health.  

He lives in Portland with his wife and daughter where he enjoys spending time with his family, trail running and the taking in the beauty that is the Pacific Northwest.
