Predoctoral

In general, individuals selected for predoctoral traineeships must already be admitted to one of the Ph.D. programs in the School of Medicine at OHSU. In addition, the individual must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident at the time of appointment. Students are asked to submit an application to the Training Committee that includes a narrative summary of previous research experience/ interests, and indicates how our training program is expected to help the student achieve his/her future research goals. This statement should include a general description of the proposed area of alcohol or drug research in which the student plans to complete the Ph.D. dissertation. The application must be accompanied by copies of the student's undergraduate and graduate transcripts and a letter of recommendation from the training faculty member who has agreed to serve as the student's mentor. The availability of predoctoral traineeships varies from year to year. Openings are typically announced in spring with an application deadline of May 1st.

Postdoctoral

Candidates for postdoctoral traineeships must have completed all requirements for the M.D. or Ph.D. degree and must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents at the time of appointment. Selection will be based on interest in the problems of alcohol and drug abuse, quality of pre- and post-graduate achievements, and predicted academic and scientific productivity in the field of alcohol and drug research. Top applicants are typically invited to OHSU to present a research seminar, visit our facilities, and meet our faculty and trainees. Individuals interested in these positions are asked to send a current curriculum vitae and reprints/preprints of research publications. The application should also include a letter that provides a narrative summary of previous research experience/interests, and indicates how the applicant expects our training program to help the trainee achieve his/her future research goals. Applicants should specify those Training Faculty members with whom they are most interested in working. They should first contact those faculty directly about their interest. Finally, applicants are asked to arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent by individuals who can provide an evaluation of academic and research potential.

Postdoctoral traineeships awarded from federally-funded institutional training grants fall under the rules and guidelines for National Research Service Awards (NRSA). NRSA stipend levels are set by the Public Health Service and depend on number of years of relevant postdoctoral experience at the time of appointment. The entry-level stipend (i.e., 0 years of relevant experience) is currently $52,704/year. In addition, funds are available to pay health insurance for the trainee and to help defray the cost of attending one scientific meeting. NRSA rules require that each trainee sign a payback agreement at the time of appointment. Initial appointments are 12 months in duration and are typically renewed for an additional 12 months if the trainee is making reasonable progress.

It is also possible that faculty members affiliated with our program may be looking for postdoctoral fellows or research associates to be supported by their individual research grants. Applicants are encouraged to contact any faculty member directly about such possibilities.
