Meet Our Recent Fellows
Tu Mai, DO
California born and Texas raised, I was fortunate enough to experience a blend of southern hospitality with west coast flair while frequently traveling to see family. I attended the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth and later completed a Family Medicine residency in Corpus Christi—where my mentors instilled a sense of purpose in managing our geriatric patients. I am excited to continue my journey in medicine with OHSU's Geriatrics Fellowship in the hopes of greatly expanding my skill set in caring for our aging population. As an added benefit of returning to the west coast, I am looking forward to exploring the PNW’s diverse selection of food and nature activities.
Alexis Garcia Coan, MD
Aka Alexis from Texas, I am from the southernmost part of the state and was fortunate to grow up with the influence of my grandparents nearby. For undergrad, I attended Hillsdale College in Michigan where my passion for older populations continued to grow as I worked with our campus's community service programs, including Adopt-a-Grandparent and our local hospice.
I returned to Texas for medical school at UT Health San Antonio, participating in MSTAR (Medical Student Training in Aging Research) and helping lead our Geri-Pal student interest group. For internal medicine residency, I moved out West to train at OHSU. I am thrilled to be staying on for Geri fellowship and continuing to learn from our incredible geriatricians and mentors here in Portland. Outside of work, I enjoy birdwatching and going on mini road trips with my husband exploring the gorgeous PNW.
Aruna Jayaram, MD
Originally from Coimbatore, a vibrant city in south of India, my childhood dream was to pursue a career in medicine. After completing my initial medical education in India, I ventured to Youngstown, OH, where I underwent training in Internal Medicine residency. Upon completion of my residency, I practiced as a community clinician in Roseburg, OR, before settling in Gresham, OR. A decade later, having witnessed the profound impact of aging in my patient’s lives I gravitated towards a specialization in geriatrics. The exceptional geriatric medicine fellowship program at OHSU presents the ideal next phase of my professional journey. My goal is to provide compassionate care that preserves the autonomy, dignity, and overall wellbeing of the elderly. Beyond medicine, I enjoy reading and exploring new destinations through travel.
