Executive team

The PI is George Mejicano, MD, MS, Senior Associate Dean for Education at OHSU. He is a national expert on competency-based education. At OHSU he oversees UME, GME, CME/CPD, graduate studies and faculty development. He leads OHSU’s team working on the AAMC’s Core EPAs for Entering Residency pilot and was the PI of OHSU’s project funded through the AMA’s Accelerating Change in Medical Education (ACE) initiative. He has served on the ACCME Board of Directors, is Immediate Past Chair of the AMA’s Academic Physicians Section and is a member of LCME.

Co-PI Tonya Fancher, MD, MPH is the Associate Dean for Workforce Innovation Community Engagement and Director of the National Center for a Diverse Healthcare Workforce (CDHW) at UC Davis. She was the PI for the ACE grant that created a 3-year pathway linked to GME training in primary care. Her work focuses on addressing health care needs for marginalized communities and she has led grants totaling over $18 million to enhance and diversify the primary care work-force, create interprofessional training programs and develop cross-cultural training programs.

Co-PI Mark Henderson, MD is Associate Dean for Admissions and Vice Chair for Education in Internal Medicine at UC Davis. He was Co-PI for UC Davis’ ACE grant (ACE-PC) and has expertise in admissions, community-based primary care education, GME redesign, workforce development, diversity and advocacy. He established the California Longitudinal Evaluation of Admissions Practices, a consortium that evaluates the long-term outcomes of the admissions process. He has studied the effect of race-ethnicity and socioeconomic/educational disadvantage on admissions.

Co-PI Joyce Hollander-Rodriguez, MD is the Program Director for OHSU Cascades East Family Medicine Residency. She serves as the Regional Associate Dean for the OHSU Campus for Rural Health, and is board member of the Rural Training Track Collaborative for supporting rural health professions training. She has collaborated on development of rural health competencies and served on the EPA Task Force for the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors.

Co-PI Mark Servis, MD is Vice Dean for Medical Education at UC Davis, responsible for UME, GME and CME. He is Vice Chair for Education, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and helped develop ACGME milestones for psychiatry. He is Past President of the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training. He helped foster innovative tracks for underserved populations including Rural PRIME, San Joaquin Valley PRIME, REACH (Reimagining Education to Advance central California Health), TEACH (Transforming Education and Community Health) and ACE-PC.

Academic DIOs

Susan Guralnick, MD is Associate Dean for GME and DIO at UC Davis. She chairs the NRMP Board of Directors and is member of the ACGME Cross-Specialty Milestones Workgroup. She served on both the ACGME Pediatric Milestones Workgroup and the ACGME Committee on Requirements. She was chair of the ACGME Transitional Year Residency Review Committee and President of the Association of Pediatric Program Directors.

Chris Swide, MD, MS is Associate Dean for GME and DIO at OHSU where he oversees 84 ACGME approved programs and more than 850 residents and fellows. He served as the Vice Chair for Education and Anesthesiology Core Program Director for more than 10 years prior to assuming his current role. He is on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and currently serves on the Transitional Year Review Committee of the ACGME.

Team leads

Erik Brodt, MD is Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at OHSU and sees patients at Warm Springs Tribal Health clinic. He is the founding director of OHSU’s Northwest Native American Center of Excellence, a multi-institutional partnership between 43 federally recognized tribes in the Pacific Northwest, the Northwest Portland Indian Health Board and Portland State University. He has launched two national centers, one at OHSU and one at the University of Wisconsin.

Patty Carney, PhD is Professor of Family Medicine and an educational researcher studying UME, GME and CME. She has doctoral training in educational psychology, instrument design and psychometric testing, and educational intervention research for physician and patient behavior change. She is an expert in qualitative research and mixed methods study designs. She co-directs MedEdNet, an AHRQ educational research network of primary care residencies across the US.

Megan Furnari, MD, MS is Assistant Professor Pediatrics at OHSU. She is Director of Wellness and Leadership Development at OHSU where she creates novel curricula to support resilient medical student leaders. Her groundbreaking work has also extended to residents and women faculty.

Amy Miller Juve, MEd, EdD is Associate Professor and the Director of Education in Anesthesiology at OHSU. Her interests include developing skills in coaching, feedback, reflective practice and self-directed learning. She is the Professional Development and Program Improvement Specialist for GME where she developed a community of practice utilizing both in-person and asynchronous methods. She leads a regional ACGME partnership to develop resident assessment workshops.

Key contributors

Jim Anderson, MD is a Professor of Radiology and the Program Director of the OHSU Radiology Residency Program. He chairs the Radiology Review Committee at the ACGME. Dr. Anderson also serves as the Assistant Dean of GME – Statewide and oversees OHSU’s work to expand GME throughout Oregon, especially in rural and underserved areas.

Karen Brasel, MD, MPH is Professor of Surgery, General Surgery Residency Program Director, Vice-Chair for Education and Assistant Dean for GME at OHSU. She was the Chair of the Curriculum Committee for the Association of Surgical Education. As a Director of the American Board of Surgery, she is leading the effort to establish EPAs for surgery.

Tracy Bumsted, MD, MPH is Associate Dean for UME at OHSU where she leads admissions, teaching services, curriculum, student affairs, assessment and outreach. She was instrumental in the development of OHSU’s internationally recognized MD curriculum. Her interests are competency-based education and assessment. She was Co-PI of OHSU’s ACE grant from the AMA.

Roger Garvin, MD is Associate Professor of Family Medicine at OHSU and served 12 years as a residency director. He oversaw development of an innovative longitudinal residency curriculum in population health, community engagement, health equity, leadership and improvement science as part of the ACGME/AAFP Length of Training Pilot project.

Alicia Gonzalez-Flores, MD is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at UC Davis. She helps lead the ACE-PC program and is Director of San Joaquin Valley PRIME which focuses on addressing MD shortages in the underserved San Joaquin Valley. She is a primary care clinician in a Sacramento FQHC and also provides tele-mentoring and training for primary care providers in rural areas.
 

Paul Gorman, MD is Professor of Medical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology and Assistant Dean for Rural Medical Education at OHSU. His work includes developing health systems science content and expanding rural medical education programs to increase the workforce in Oregon. Dr Gorman practiced in rural Oregon & serves on the Oregon Healthcare Workforce Commission.

Mallory Johnson, MPA is Associate Director of Operations for the CDHW at UC Davis, where she focuses on leading research to recruit, train and retain a diverse healthcare workforce to advance health equity. She is pursuing her PhD and researching the rural workforce & geospatial analysis.

Logan Jones obtained his MD degree from the University of Nebraska and is a 2nd year internal medicine resident at OHSU. He is on the National Advisory Panel for the Reimagining Residency Initiative and has held leadership roles in education, health policy and technology innovation.

Cindy Koonz, MS is the Liaison for GME Programs and Program Manager for GME Statewide at OHSU. She managed the Emergency Medicine GME program for 17 years and helped develop the Program Coordinator (PC) Professional Development Series that train PCs on core GME topics.

Holly Montjoy, MD is Associate Program Director at Cascades East Family Medicine Residency and Medical Staff President for SkyLakes Hospital. She completed her residency in rural Klamath Falls, Oregon and has presented nationally on her experience training rural physicians.

Mary Rose Saint-Cyr, MS is Post-baccalaureate Program Coordinator, Office of Student and Resident Diversity at UC Davis, and Consortium Coordinator for 5 UC Schools. She worked for pipeline programs in NYC on advocacy of underserved pre-medical students.

Kristi Threlkeld, MBA is Education Manager in Internal Medicine at UC Davis. With over 25 years of experience, she specializes in accreditation, evaluation and credentialing. She is the Program Manager for TEACH, a training track for residents interested in caring for underserved patients.

Hendry Ton, MD, MS is Professor of Psychiatry at UC Davis. His interests include health disparities, cultural competence, diversity/inclusion and professionalism. He serves as interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Inclusion where he oversees the overall diversity and inclusion efforts at UC Davis Health. He is also the Associate Dean for Faculty Development and Diversity.

Ryan Traynham is the Director of GME at UC Davis. He has 17 years of experience in education. He previously worked on the ACE grant. His role in COMPADRE will be to ensure GME resources and support are given to achieve the objectives and to collaborate with the GME Office at OHSU.

Marjorie Westervelt, MPH is Director of Curriculum/Educational Technology at UC Davis and is pursuing her PhD in education. She oversees the operations of the Curriculum Unit, ensuring staffing, resources and support. As the Longitudinal Curriculum Manager at UC Davis, she helped to implement innovative programs, including ACE-PC and the rural education track.
