Leslie Myatt, Ph.D., FRCOG
Biography
Dr. Myatt is Professor and Director of Perinatal Research in the Dept of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Associate Director of the Bob and Charlee Moore Institute for Nutrition and Wellness. He has been continuously funded by NIH since 1987 with over 40 years’ experience and over 290 publications in several areas of perinatology examining the regulation of prostaglandin synthesis and action in intrauterine tissues at parturition, regulation of placental blood flows and the role of oxidative and nitrative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction and sexual dimorphism in placental health, epigenetic regulation of placental function and biomarkers to predict preeclampsia and other adverse outcomes. His objective has always been to utilize basic science approaches to the study of clinical problems and apply the findings in a translational manner. Dr. Myatt has broad expertise in placental perfusion, trophoblast cell culture, molecular biology, proteomic and epigenetic techniques with many local, national and international collaborators. He has also directed several NIH-training grants including a MSTP program (MD/PhD) and has held leadership positions in several scientific societies. He has trained and mentored many graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and clinical subspecialty trainees in his laboratory many of whom now hold senior leadership positions in their own right.
Dr. Myatt was born and raised in Yorkshire, England and received both his BSc and PhD from the University of London, UK. He moved to Oregon in 2015 having previously been a faculty member at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, and at the University of Cincinnati, where he was Director of the NIH-funded Physician Scientist Training Program (MD/PhD) and the Women’s Reproductive Health Research Scholars Program. Dr. Myatt served as Editor of the journal Placenta (1997 to 2004), President of the Perinatal Research Society (1997), President of the International Federation of Placenta Associations (2002 to 2004) and President of the Society for Gynecologic Investigation (2009 to 2010).
He is internationally known for his research which applies basic science approaches to clinical problems in perinatology, including preeclampsia, preterm birth and gestational diabetes. His research interests include control of fetal placental vascular reactivity, the role of obesity, oxidative and nitrative stress in placental function and fetal programming and the regulation of prostaglandin synthesis and action in intrauterine tissues at parturition. He has published over 270 papers and 350 abstracts and has served on many review panels and study sections for NIH, CIHR and other international grant giving bodies. Dr. Myatt is also a member of the Global Pregnancy Collaboration (CoLab), which works with maternal and fetal medicine researchers around the globe to facilitate research addressing adverse pregnancy outcomes.
Dr. Myatt was elected as a Fellow (ad eundem) of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2013 for his contributions to women’s health research and has been presented with the Naftolin Award for Mentorship and the Distinguished Scientist Award by the Society for Reproductive Investigation.
His passions in life are his family, mentorship and soccer. Memorable moments include meeting his wife, helicopter skiing and being embraced by Stevie Wonder!
