What to expect
We will talk with you about all of your symptoms and your goals. You can expect that your treatment plan will be right for you.
Physical therapy should not cause pain while trying to reduce it. If that happens, we will make changes to your treatment. We respect your pain boundaries and will work with you on alternative options to meet your needs.
Your treatment plan may include:
Therapeutic exercise: Your therapist will show you ways to strengthen muscles that can reduce pelvic pain or help you control your bladder and pelvic floor.
Manual therapy: Your therapist will use skilled touch, massage and movement of joints and soft tissue to lessen pain, increase range of motion or reduce swelling.
Electromyography: Your therapist will use sensors to measure the electrical activity inside your muscles. Muscles produce electrical signals when they contract, so EMG can show how your pelvic muscles tense and relax when you do certain activities. Our two-channel EMG technology includes a computer display. This lets us track your muscle function in real time and train your muscles to respond differently.
Electrical stimulation: Your therapist will use a machine that sends a mild electrical current to your body through skin electrodes. Specific settings and specific electrode locations let us use this treatment to care for many different conditions.
Electrical stimulation can help you strengthen your abdominal or pelvic muscles. It can also help reduce:
- Pain
- Urinary urgency
- Fecal urgency
- Urge-related leaks
- Constipation
