Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at OHSU
At OHSU's Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, we pride ourselves in giving the best patient care and quality of surgical service possible, as well as the highest quality education to our students and residents.
The Oregon Health & Science University offers a six-year program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery that leads to a certificate as well as a medical degree from OHSU School of Medicine. The goal of this program is to produce a well-rounded oral and maxillofacial surgeon who will become an exceptional practitioner of his or her specialty within, both dentistry and medicine, a candidate for a competitive post-residency fellowship, or an outstanding academic career.
Clinical and didactic education and training takes place at the Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry, School of Medicine, the Legacy Emanuel Hospital, Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital, Providence of Portland, Providence Saint Vincent's, and Shriner's Hospital Portland Campus. We serve two level 1 trauma centers for Portland, Oregon, a beautiful Northwest city with a metropolitan population of more than two million people.
Residents in oral and maxillofacial surgery perform about 1,000 major hospital surgical procedures per year including 420 trauma, 80 temporomandibular joint, 100 reconstructive, 160 pathology, 60 craniofacial and clefts, 50 cosmetic and 75 orthognathic. There are more than 6,000 outpatients visits per year. Oral and maxillofacial residents gain extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of a wide variety of oral and maxillofacial problems on both inpatients and outpatients including dental implants, orthognathic problems, oncology, temporomandibular joint, facial plastics, dentoalveolar, cosmetic, craniofacial, cleft lip, and palate repair and many other aspects of head and neck surgery.
The didactic curriculum in oral and maxillofacial surgery includes all facets of oral and maxillofacial surgery to include dentoalveolar surgery, anesthesia, dental implants, bone augmentation, soft tissue augmentation, benign pathology, malignant pathology, orthognathic surgery, craniofacial abnormalities, surgical airway, temporomandibular joint disease, and practice management. Starting with medical school gives residents time to assimilate with the hospital and build a foundation of basic medical principles. Moving into anesthesia and general surgery builds surgical knowledge. The curriculum culminates with 24 months of dedicated oral and maxillofacial surgery time to hone skill sets.
The program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, or CODA. The most recent site visit in 2022. The next visit is in October 2024.

The OHSU OMS externship offers qualified third and fourth year dental students an opportunity to gain firsthand experience within an oral and maxillofacial surgery residency, while providing an opportunity to learn from our residents and faculty. Externs will participate in rounds, conferences, operating rooms, clinics, and on-call duties. Our externship duration is one week at OHSU. We accept one extern at a time; application can be competitive.
Externs are expected to participate in our program to the fullest extent possible by taking night call, attending surgical rounds, journal clubs, and scrubbing in to O.R. cases. Each extern will also give a brief presentation on an OMS topic of their choice during our weekly OHSU teaching conference.
No application will be considered until it is fully complete. OHSU does not have student housing; it's the extern's responsibility to make their own housing arrangements here in Portland, as well as cover their travel and personal expenses.
