Student Inclusion and Success Coordinators
What we do
The School of Nursing Student Inclusion and Success Coordinators play a pivotal role in recruiting and retaining students from underrepresented groups. Our efforts foster a welcoming and inclusive campus environment and contribute to the diversity of the student community and the health care workforce. In collaboration with OHSU and other community partners, we strive to create an inclusive and welcoming campus environment that benefits the entire community.
Recruitment efforts and support
A large part of our work is student recruitment on Oregon's university and community college campuses. We support pre-nursing students of underrepresented groups transitioning into nursing and offer pre-nursing workshops. Some of the recruitment work we do include:
Pre-nursing and prospective student support
We strive to support pre-nursing students from underrepresented groups as they transition into our nursing program.
Mock interviews
You'll gain insightful knowledge about the admissions interview process and receive guidance on interview preparation from experienced nursing students.
Pre-nursing workshop
These workshops were developed to introduce pre-nursing students to nursing and prepare them for nursing school and beyond.
Retention
We strive to enhance retention rates at the School of Nursing through our many activities and campus-specific support opportunities. We maintain strong relationships with students through a variety of retention-focused efforts, including:
Academic support
We help connect students with academic support services, such as the Teaching and Learning Center, Learning and Writing Support Center, and peer tutoring.
Student check-ins
We meet with students individually to better understand their unique needs and monitor their progress toward program completion requirements.
Financial resources
We work to connect students to financial resources within OHSU and beyond. We offer personalized support with scholarship essay writing and application guidance.
Graduate exploration workshops
These workshops introduce nursing students to various graduate school opportunities available at OHSU.
Mentorship
We connect students with mentors from the local community, many of whom are proud OHSU School of Nursing alumni.
Student inclusion
At OHSU, we highly encourage students to take an active role in their campus and take advantage of our many campus opportunities and events. We help our students find campus-specific activities related to their interests.
It is crucial students receive the guidance they need to navigate available resources successfully. OHSU nursing students can access their regional host campus resources/services through their student fees. We help connect students to specific host campus resources and academic accommodations, provide food resources, and more.

Community outreach efforts
We are active in statewide community outreach and collaborate frequently with underrepresented communities and organizations serving underrepresented individuals.
We bring nursing into the spotlight for prospective students within our community by connecting them with current nursing students who share their nursing school experience and can answer questions about their personal journey.
