Residency Programs
OHSU residency programs are devoted to educating, training and mentoring the leading neuroscience clinicians and researchers of the future.
Due to breathtaking advances in neuroscience and technology, neurosurgery has become perhaps the most complex and challenging field of medicine. The OHSU Neurological Surgery residency trains doctors to be lifelong learners and problem solvers. Our neurosurgery faculty includes leaders of the national effort to redesign neurosurgical education.
OHSU offers education in basic and clinical research, grantsmanship, evidence-based medicine and professionalism.
Training
The OHSU neurological surgery residency has a long tradition of excellence in procedural training. We provide hands-on experience in all areas of practice, including:
- Tumor surgery
- Vascular and endovascular surgery
- Complex spine surgery
- Functional stereotaxis
- Skull base surgery
- Pediatric, epilepsy, pain and peripheral nerve procedures
- Radiosurgery
We are located at the only medical school and national Clinical Cancer Center in Oregon. Neurological surgery residents train in three major facilities on one campus: OHSU Hospital, OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital and the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
OHSU boasts many neurosurgical programs unique in the state:
- Functional and epilepsy surgery (adult and pediatric)
- Comprehensive pediatric, endovascular and skull base surgery
- Intra-operative MR imaging
Training is supported by a dissection curriculum and fully instrumented dissection laboratory.
Mentoring
The definition of leadership in medicine is evolving. We mentor trainees in the skills necessary to contribute original, creative and durable advances to our field.
Leadership may include basic or translational science, clinical trials, education, advocacy, ethics and professionalism. We encourage applications from candidates of diverse backgrounds and with special interests and accomplishments suited to these challenges.
At OHSU, our goal is not simply to teach, learn and practice neurosurgery, but to make neurosurgery better.
Graduate education is the major mission of Oregon Health & Science University. The neurology residency training program is the first priority of the OHSU Department of Neurology. Our fully accredited four-year program accepts three residents per year. Our goal is to train clinical neuroscientists: individuals who provide expert patient care and who understand basic and clinical neurosciences.
In addition to emphasizing education, OHSU neurology faculty are active in clinical care and clinical and basic research. As a result of this exposure, graduates of the program are prepared for both private clinical practice and academic neurology careers.
Current residents find that our neurology staff values teaching as an exchange of ideas and an activity that promotes interaction and inquiry among faculty and residents. Residents are treated as junior colleagues. Formal and informal interaction between faculty and residents is encouraged.
Training
The four-year integrated neurology residency program includes an internship year with a strong emphasis in internal medicine and three years of neurology residency. The four-year training includes:
- Inpatient ward experience
- Outpatient subspecialty and continuity of care clinics
- Consultation rotations
- Elective rotations
- Teaching lectures and conferences
Residents who have completed one year of appropriate post-graduate training in internal medicine may begin three years of neurology residency directly.
The Residency Program of the Department of Psychiatry at Oregon Health and Science University adheres to the basic belief that human beings exist in biological, social and cultural matrices which directly affect their sense of psychological well-being. With this firmly in mind, the training program emphasizes clinical proficiency in assessing and intervening within these matrices for the benefit of patients. Insights thus gained have led graduates to become leaders in their community as psychiatric clinicians and academicians.
The Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at OHSU is committed to providing exceptional resident training in a welcoming, scholarly environment. Our faculty are dedicated to teaching and clinical excellence, providing our residents with the foundation for lifelong learning.
We have the benefit of practicing in one of the most beautiful areas of the country and being affiliated with a growing, dynamic medical center. OHSU is truly a great place to train and work.
