Accreditation in the School of Medicine
Institutional and programmatic accreditation standards and review provide continuous assessment and evaluation of the OHSU School of Medicine educational programs. Accrediting agencies (institutional and programmatic) are under the U.S. Department of Education. OHSU receives institutional accreditation through the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU).
The NWCCU accredits School of Medicine (SoM) graduate programs leading to the Master's and Doctorate degrees. Following is information about SoM accreditation and SoM programs' current status.
Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities
Oregon Health & Science University maintains continuous accreditation by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), a regional accrediting body approved by the U.S. Department of Education.
Regional accreditation serves as the most important means of assuring the quality of higher education, through rigorous peer-review and evaluation. OHSU's most recent reaffirmation of accreditation occurred in 2023 after a comprehensive report with a site visit. OHSU’s next report to NWCCU will be in fall 2025 with a Mid-Cycle review. Read more
Undergraduate Medical Education (M.D. Program)
Oregon Health & Science University’s undergraduate medical education (M.D.) program maintains full accreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the body that sets standards for medical education programs leading to the M.D. degree in the United States and Canada.
On October 31, 2023 the LCME cleared OHSU School of Medicine’s Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) of all remaining areas requiring improvement. This brought the M.D. Program into full compliance with all accreditation standards, earning a satisfactory performance in all 93 elements. The next full LCME survey and site visit will be in the 2027-2028 calendar year.
Find additional information on accreditation and accreditation verification, by visiting www.lcme.org or contacting the LCME Secretariat at lcme@aamc.org.
