Advanced Grant Writing Class
Audience: Faculty.
Description: An intensive, four-week grant writing course offered periodically. Topics include strategic placement of information, improving sentence structure, and revising for clarity and readability. Class sessions are complemented by one-one-one sessions with the instructor. Can be requested by departments.

Biostatistics & Design Program
Audience: Basic, clinical and population science researchers.
Description: Pre-award support includes statistical support with grant submissions, protocol development, study design, sample size and power analysis and statistical analysis plan. Post-award support with statistical analysis, data management, data preparation, interim analysis, statistical support with manuscript preparation and review.
Time: Biostatistics Drop in Session are offered to all OHSU investigators every Tuesday from 12 to 2 p.m. To register, email bdp@ohsu.edu.

Human Investigations Program (HIP)
Audience: Faculty, clinical and postdoctoral fellows, and graduate and professional students enrolled in doctoral programs.
Description: The Human Investigations Program, commonly referred to as HIP, offers an integrated clinical and translational research education curriculum. Three tracks are offered including a masters in clinical research, a certificate degree in human investigations and a non-degree track for those wanting to take individual courses. More than 25 courses are offered in the curriculum. Courses related to career development include: Proposal Development, Scientific Writing, and an Academic Leadership series.

HIP Scientific Writing Course
Audience: Faculty, clinical and postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students.
Description: Offered through the Human Investigations Program, this course provides insight into the peer-reviewed journal process in clinical medicine and surgery. The trainee also gains an understanding of the elements of clinical science writing that are expected in peer-reviewed publications. The topics covered include elements of the clinical science paper; writing the paper from concept to manuscript; defining the peer-reviewed literature; finding appropriate and best journals for submission; elements of peer review including how to review and how to respond to reviewers' comments. This course also explores the art of oral presentation of scientific data.

HIP Academic Leadership
Audience: Faculty, clinical and postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students. Description: The Human Investigations Program offers courses in academic leadership including: Influence and effective communication for leading research teams, Best practices in project management, and Understanding and managing academic organizations. These courses are directed at individuals who plan to make research in an academic setting a major part of their career.

NRSA Application Workshop
Audience: Students, postdoctoral fellows, and department grants coordinators.
Description: If you're planning to apply for an individual F-series fellowship from the NIH, we encourage you to attend this workshop to learn about essential, non-research elements of your fellowship application. The workshop will cover: elements needed for an InfoEd proposal; how to develop a budget; how to manage reference letters; biosketches and PMCID numbers; and elements of a great training plan.

OCTRI Design Studio
Audience: Participants include postdoctoral or clinical fellows, and early faculty writing a career development grant or first independent research. Audience includes senior faculty.
Description: Design Studio is an interactive research seminar designed to provide informative feedback to faculty or fellows who intend to submit a career development grant or first independent research grant. The seminar brings together an audience of senior scientists (similar to grant reviewers) to provide constructive feedback on the research objectives and design. This conference is created to maximize the success of OHSU's early-career investigators.

Vollum Writing Program
Audience: Early faculty, clinical and postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students.
Description: An in-depth, six-week professional science writing course that focuses on papers and grants. In addition to class sessions, students receive six individual meetings with the instructor where they will receive personal coaching on their in-progress writing.

Cost: No fees are assessed directly to Vollum researchers or students if they are in a School of Medicine PhD-program; other participants will be charged a $500 fee.
