Our excellence
- Team-based care: OHSU sleep specialists understand and treat every type of sleep disorder. Our team includes neurologists, pulmonologists and psychiatrists who focus on sleep medicine.
- Many specialists: We also work with OHSU specialists whose work touches on sleep disorders, such as dentists, surgeons, and ear, nose and throat providers.
- Research: At OHSU, Oregon’s only academic health center, our researchers are also national leaders in studying sleep and how it affects health.
Coordinated care
What to expect: Our specialists will listen to your story and evaluate you for a sleep disorder.
If you have a disorder, they will work with you to decide the best treatment. Your plan will most likely include:
- A consultation to evaluate your sleep concerns.
- An at-home sleep study or an overnight sleep study in one of our comfortable sleep labs, in Portland and in Hillsboro.
- Home medical equipment if you have sleep apnea.
The latest technology
Home testing: Our home sleep tests can measure moderate to severe sleep apnea. Smartphone apps, bedside monitors and wearable items such as bracelets and smart watches can collect and analyze data about your sleep patterns.
Research and clinical trials
OHSU’s sleep medicine experts are at the forefront of research on sleep disorders.
- Dr. Asha Singh, director of the OHSU Sleep Medicine Program, is studying the use of oxygen therapy to treat sleep apnea in patients with chronic heart failure. Dr. Singh has also researched the effect of sleep disorders on women’s health.
- Dr. Kimberly Hutchison is working to develop innovative technology to make CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) devices more comfortable and effective. She is collaborating with OHSU’s Oregon Clinical and Translational Research Institute and its Biomedical Innovation Program.
- OHSU’s Sleep and Mood Disorders Laboratory studies how the body’s clock is affected by light and melatonin.
- Researchers at OHSU’s Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences are leaders in understanding the role sleep plays in overall health and in discovering ways to improve sleep quality.
- OHSU offers many clinical trials, including on conditions that may contribute to sleep disorders.
