Our expertise
OHSU’s team has an international reputation for excellence in care for complex vascular conditions. We also have a history of innovation. We developed many practices and techniques that are widely used today. This includes the world’s first angioplasty, a less invasive way to open a blocked artery.
As Oregon’s only academic medical center, we also have a network of specialists in all of the conditions that may play a role in blood vessel disorders. This lets us create a treatment plan that fits your needs.
Our patients benefit from:
- Vascular surgeons with up to eight years of training after medical school. We provide complete care for vascular disease, from medication and lifestyle changes to surgical procedures.
- A team with world-class expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of vascular conditions, including complex aortic disorders.
- A vascular lab that is accredited by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission. This lab performs more than 12,000 studies a year, giving us special insight into vascular disorders.
- Groundbreaking research and clinical trials, including studies of new treatments for aortic aneurysms.
Complete care
We offer all types of vascular therapy. Our services include:
Team-based care. Vascular conditions can affect many parts of your body. Our vascular specialists work closely with experts in heart care, podiatry, kidney disease, diabetes and more to treat you. Our providers meet weekly to discuss complex cases and create personalized treatment plans.
Support with scheduling. If you need diagnostic tests at OHSU, we aim to schedule them all on the same day. If you live outside the Portland area, we can arrange for your local hospital to do scans for our specialists to review. OHSU’s case managers also can help organize your follow-up and rehab care after a hospital stay.
Advanced technology. Our team has the latest tools to care for vascular disorders. We have precise diagnostic imaging systems and leading techniques to clear blockages, remove plaque and restore blood flow. We can treat many conditions without invasive surgery, using small cuts and tiny tools.
Care for complex disorders. We have experts who specialize in treating many complex vascular conditions. Our surgeons have experience in all types of surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome. We work with OHSU’s Comprehensive Pain Center to manage care for patients with this condition. We also have specialists in genetic disorders that can affect blood vessels, like Raynaud’s syndrome, Buerger’s disease and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
Treatment for renal and mesenteric vascular disorders. Vascular disease may affect important blood vessels to the kidneys, intestines and other organs. Our team has decades of experience treating these rare conditions.
Wound care centers. If you have peripheral vascular disease and wounds that won’t heal, you can get treatment at OHSU and Adventist Health Portland’s wound care clinics. We offer education and treatment, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
Cardiovascular trauma and intensive care. As one of Oregon’s few Level 1 trauma centers, OHSU is here for you if you need urgent heart care, including emergency aortic surgery. Our cardiovascular intensive care unit treats patients 24/7.
Clinical trials and research
Our researchers are always studying new treatments and approaches to vascular care. We are testing new devices to treat vascular disease, including innovative graft techniques to treat aortic aneurysms. We are studying new stem cell and genetic therapies for people with severe vascular disease.
If you could benefit from a clinical trial, your care team will discuss it with you.
