Data and Institutional Effectiveness

The Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness supports critical decision-making at OHSU. We measure educational outcomes, perform research and analysis, and share data with partners inside and outside the institution. Our findings provide key insights to all levels of OHSU’s educational community, informing efforts to support and improve both education and the student experience.

Mission fulfillment and indicators reports
In our annual Mission Fulfillment and Indicators report, we assess OHSU’s progress in meeting targets for indicators of effectiveness. The report compares data across student demographic dimensions, such as age, degree type, financial background, parent education and more. It also compares key metrics across peer health sciences institutions.
How OHSU measures and improves education
To make effective improvements to education at OHSU, we first measure indicators of effectiveness. These indicators include data about student learning, student achievement and how OHSU and its programs function.
Gathering the right kinds of data is an important first step. Just as important, though, is using the data effectively. Our mission alignment and shared governance processes help us do both.
Aligning our performance measures to OHSU’s mission
We center our indicators of effectiveness around OHSU’s mission and goals:
- Building a diverse, equitable environment where all can thrive and excel.
- Being the destination for transformational learning.
- Enhancing health and health care in every community.
- Discovering and innovating to advance science and optimize health worldwide.
- Partnering with communities for a better world.
- Ensuring a sustainable foundational infrastructure.
These goals inform six areas of focus, which we use to define our indicators and measure OHSU’s progress:
Institutional
- Develop student pathways to meet the health needs of an increasingly diverse Oregon and nation.
- Provide a supportive, diverse and inclusive learning and work environment for students, faculty and staff.
- Expand OHSU's prominence as a research university.
- Provide access to health care for patients across Oregon.
Student achievement
- Produce quality graduates in health professions, scientists, engineers and managers who meet appropriate industry standards.
Student learning
- Engage in student learning outcomes assessment to evaluate quality and use results for improvement of academic programs and student services.
