Instruments at South Waterfront

The ALM Core has a number of different imaging setups that excel at different applications. Below is an overview of instruments located at the South Waterfront in KCRB.

Laser Scanning Confocal, Super Resolution Confocal, and Multiphoton Excitation Microscope

Zeiss LSM 880 with Airy and Fast Airyscan. Laser scanning confocal microscope on an inverted stand. This setup is capable of three different imaging modalities; conventional laser scanning microscopy, super resolution confocal microscopy using Zeiss’ Airyscan detector, and multiphoton excitation microscopy using a chameleon laser for 2-photon excitation.

Spinning Disk Confocal

Yokogawa CSU-X1 on Zeiss Axio Observer. Spinning disk confocal microscope on an inverted imaging stand. Spinning disk confocal imaging outperforms laser-scanning microscopy for live-cell imaging. The system accepts mutli-well plates for image-based screening assays, and also features a widefield mode

Crest Optics X-Light V3 on Nikon stand: Spinning disk confocal microscope on an inverted imaging stand. The system features both widefield and confocal modes, as well as a near infrared channel for a total of up to five fluorescent channels per experiment. Also featured is CO2 and temperature control for live cell imaging

High Resolution Widefield

Zeiss Axioscan Slide Scanner. Fully automated imaging of routine histological and fluorescent sections.

Zeiss Apotome 3 on an Axio Observer. Our most economical solution for imaging fluorescence and colorimetric stains. System is on an inverted stand and uses Apotome 3 for grid-based optical sectioning and a color camera for high resolution color imaging.

Sheet Illumination

Zeiss Lightsheet Z.1 for aqueous and CLARITY imaging. Sheet illumination allows for imaging of clarified, thick samples. The same system can also be converted into a setup for fast 3D imaging of live specimens.
