Specimen Requirements:

Per ASCO/CAP guidelines, breast tissue should be fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin for 6 to 72 hours for hormone receptor immunohistochemical analysis. Ischemic time prior to fixation should be kept to a minimum (less than 1 hour). Submit tissue to Surgical Pathology with a Laboratory Requisition. (Opens in a new window)

Comments:

The Her-2/neu immunohistochemical test is used for the semi-quantitative detection of c-erbB-2 (HER2) antigen in sections of formalin fixed, paraffin embedded normal and neoplastic tissue and is performed on an automated slide stainer according to ASCO/CAP guidelines. It is indicated as an aid in the assessment of patients for whom "Herceptin" (Trastuzumab) treatment is being considered, primarily breast and gastric cancers.
