Helping workplaces support the safety, health, and well-being of workers

The Supportive Workplaces training hub at the Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences provides evidence-based workplace training programs designed to improve worker safety, health, and well-being. 

Our training programs cover topics including workplace mental health support, sleep support, safety support, veteran support, and more. 

Available training modules

Workplace Mental Health Support Training for Managers

Workplace Mental Health Training for Managers is an evidence-based program that teaches leaders supportive strategies that protect and promote positive mental health. It also helps managers recognize and respond to signs that an employee may be experiencing distress.

In this one-hour online training, managers learn tangible, work-appropriate skills to improve employee mental health and well-being.

Mental Health Support Training for First Responder Leaders

First responders have many risks and challenges that come with the job they do.

While generally accepted as part of the job, the stressful conditions first responders manage daily have an impact on their mental health and well-being.

Mental Health Support Training for First Responder Leaders is an evidence-based training program that teaches leaders and supervisors supportive strategies to protect and promote positive mental health. It also helps them recognize and respond to signs that a team member may be experiencing distress.

Mental Health Support Training for Military Leaders

The Mental Health Support Training for Military Leaders is an evidence-based program developed as part of the Readiness Supportive Leadership Training (RESULT) study and evaluated with an active duty U.S. Army population. 

The training has been adapted for all branches of the military to enhance resilience in the face of stressful and hazardous workplace situations.

Sleep Support Training

Sleep Support Training is an evidence-based program designed to help supervisors support their employees' work-life balance and sleep health.

​​The program includes a one-hour, online training program for leaders and supervisors, as well as information and resources for employees about healthy sleep behaviors, sleep tracking, and setting attainable goals to improve sleep as a part of a healthy lifestyle.

Sleep Support Training for Military Leaders

Sleep Support Training for Military Leaders trains participants in family-supportive behaviors and sleep strategies. The program includes information about healthy sleep behaviors, sleep tracking, and setting attainable goals to improve sleep health. This program applies to all branches of the armed forces and all levels of leadership.

Safety Support Training

The Safety & Health Improvement Program (SHIP) is designed to help organizations promote employee health, safety, and work-life balance by increasing supervisor support and team effectiveness. Designed for managers and supervisors, this evidence-based training teaches participants how to improve work-life and safety support behaviors. The program includes a helpful start guide, and a  one-hour online training course, followed by a behavior tracking exercise and follow-up guide.

Veteran Support Training

Veteran Support Training is an evidence-based program that teaches leaders how to support veterans as they transition to civilian employment. 

​This training focuses on the inherent strengths that employees with military experience possess, as well as the unique challenges that veterans and service members face when transitioning to the civilian sector.
