Biography
Dr. Herzig earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt University and completed his surgical residency at Brown Medical School. At Brown, he won over a dozen awards for excellence in teaching, patient care, and research, including the Outstanding Resident Physician award in his last year. He went on to complete advanced training in colon and rectal surgery, including minimally invasive surgery and endoscopy at the University of Texas, Houston.
Dr. Herzig joined the faculty at OHSU in 2005. He completed the Human Investigations Program in 2009, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2012. He is part of the OHSU Digestive Health Center and the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute. He specializes in the treatment of both cancerous and noncancerous diseases of the colon and rectum. Dr. Herzig is committed to providing the highest quality personal service to each individual. Because of this, he has been recognized as one of "Portland's Top Doctors" and has been named as one of "America's Top Surgeons."
Dr. Herzig's research interests include colorectal surgery outcomes, hereditary colorectal cancer syndromes, timing of surgery, and non-operative management of rectal cancer. He has started the state's first Colorectal Cancer Registry and has collaborated with other researchers at OHSU to continue this institution's leadership in colorectal cancer research.
Institutionally, he is the moderator of the weekly GI Oncology Tumor Board, and is the Surgical Director for gastroenterology endoscopy privileging. Regionally, he was the President of the Oregon Chapter of the American College of Surgeons for the 2014-2016 term, as well as the Local Arrangements Chair of the North Pacific Surgical Association for 2015. Nationally, he is on the Communications Committee for the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract and the Clinical Practices Guidelines Committee for the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. He is sought after institutionally, locally, and nationally to lecture on colon and rectal cancer, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Crohn's disease, and pelvic floor disorders.
