Leonardo M. Pereira, M.D., M.C.R.
- Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, School of Medicine
- Vice Chair, Clinical Outreach, Obstetrics and Gynecology, School of Medicine
Biography
Dr. Pereira specializes in preterm birth, prenatal diagnosis, ultrasound, fetal transfusions and shunt placements. His research interests include proteomics, prevention of preterm birth and reduction of neonatal mortality. After his first delivery in medical school, Dr. Pereira knew he wanted to go into obstetrics. With high risk obstetrics, he found pregnancy care to be even more rewarding. Dr. Pereira appreciates the trust that patients put in him and derives great satisfaction in getting to know his patients and families, experiencing the special bond that forms and having patients return to say hello. Another part of the job that Dr. Pereira likes is performing a procedure or surgery that ends up saving a baby's life, which are very special moments for the whole team.
Born in Brazil, Dr. Pereira grew up in Philadelphia where he met his wife and did all his medical training. He moved to Portland in 2004 to join the maternal-fetal medicine team at OHSU. He and his wife love raising their kids here. In his leisure time, Dr. Pereira enjoys camping, hiking and rafting. He also loves 80's movies and music and says that all three of his children are embarrassed by his taste in music.
Pregnancy and birth philosophy:
"I only provide pregnancy care to individuals with high risk pregnancies, but within that framework I bring patient preferences and autonomy into all of my decision making. I involve patients in the decision making process and explain details to them as we go along."
