Monica Hinds, Ph.D.
- Professor of Biomedical Engineering, School of Medicine
- Assistant Dean of Graduate Student Affairs, Dean's Office, School of Medicine
- Program in Molecular and Cellular Biosciences, School of Medicine
Biography
Dr. Monica Hinds is a Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). Prior to joining OHSU, she received degrees in Mechanical Engineering, including a B.S. from the University of Pennsylvania, an M.S. from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins University.
Her Ph.D. dissertation work focused on the fluid mechanics involved in atherogenesis, the initiation of plaque formation in arteries. Dr. Hinds then developed elastin based biomaterials in her work at Providence St. Vincent Hospital in Portland, Oregon.
In 2003, Dr. Hinds joined the newly formed Department of Biomedical Engineering at OHSU.
Dr. Hinds’s work includes the study of biomaterials for cardiovascular applications, understanding the role of cytoskeletal structure on endothelial cell functions, and the determination of the role of hyperglycemia in causing congenital heart defects. Dr. Hinds utilizes in vitro mechanistic studies coupled with in vivo animal models to apply her engineering approaches to the causes, progression and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
