Biography
Sarah Swanson, M.A., CCCE, CHW (she/her/hers) is a Community Cancer Control Specialist for the South Coast region (Coos, Curry, Douglas, Jackson, and Josephine Counties) for OHSU's Community Outreach, Research & Engagement (CORE) team. She is currently part of a team that is supporting the statewide initiative to build capacity for cancer prevention in Oregon's rural communities. She is also a childbirth educator and full spectrum doula.
Sarah previously worked as a grant management specialist for a tribal government, and as a scholarship/grant coordinator for a rural charter school in the region (2021-2023). She previously worked as an Anatomy and Physiology Instructor at a community college in Southern Oregon, and as an A&P and microbiology instructor at a university in Southern Oregon (2008-2013). She also has worked as a childbirth educator for Legacy Health Systems (2017-present). Though, her most important job is as a mother to two spirited girls, and one very lazy English retriever!
Sarah has expertise in health and science education, instruction, and curriculum development, educator training and program development, as well as grant writing and coordination of grant programming, especially in rural areas. She has a passion for developing programs in rural areas that support health and access to health education, specifically for those facing poverty and low access to health care and health initiatives. Additionally, she has a passion for supporting pregnant persons and families during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and the fourth trimester.
She holds a B.S., with honors in Biology, with minors in Chemistry and Education, from Southern Oregon University, a M.A. in Teaching from Southern Oregon University, a microcredential in Foundations of School Based Mental and Behavioral Health from Southern Oregon University, as well as a lifetime certificate as a full spectrum doula from Stillbirthday, is a certified Childbirth Educator (Childbirth and Postpartum Professionals Association), and is a Registered Community Health Worker (CHW).
