Joining the IRB

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is a designated group of experts and community members that review research being done on people. The primary objective is to protect the rights and welfare of humans participating in research.

IRB membership at OHSU offers unique professional development and community service opportunities. Through engagement in discussions regarding research and ethics, members play an important role in participant protection, review efficiency, and the inclusion of diverse viewpoints when reviewing research applications.

"This webinar from the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) discusses the HHS regulations and policies related to IRB membership requirements. It explains the requirements and provides examples to help viewers think through applying the regulations. (April 28, 2017)"

What does membership entail?

  • As a board member, you will undergo our onboarding process which consists of comprehensive trainings and meeting observations to acquaint you with the research procedure and IRB expectations. The IRB welcomes members who do not have a scientific background (non-scientists) and those who are not affiliated with OHSU (community members).

  • Membership on the IRB spans a three-year term, with the possibility of extension and flexibility for early termination if necessary.

  • Members are expected to attend up to 2 monthly meetings, each no longer than 2 hours. The overall time commitment is approximately 4 to 6 hours per month. Members are asked to review study materials in advance to prepare for discussions during the meeting.

  • The OHSU IRB operates through four panels, convening every Friday and alternate Tuesdays and Thursdays. You will be assigned a panel that aligns with your availability.

  • Members are required to sign a Confidentiality Agreement as IRB meeting materials and discussions are confidential.

  • There may be opportunities for you to contribute insights on social/behavioral research outside of regular review process.
