Rood Family Pavilion
The Gary and Christine Rood Family Pavilion gives you and your family a home away from home. You’ll find places to relax, gather and focus on healing. The pavilion is run in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oregon & SW Washington.
You’ll find:
- Spaces indoors and out devoted to your comfort and well-being.
- A location at the heart of OHSU’s South Waterfront campus, with easy access to clinics, mass transit and the Portland Aerial Tram.
- Private quarters to rest and recharge.
- Common spaces to cook, hang out and take part in group activities.
Rood Family Pavilion offerings
The pavilion opened in 2019 with a five-story guest house atop six levels of parking. It holds 38 suites for pediatric patients and their families, and 38 for adult patients and their families.
Two floors are dedicated to pediatric families, with no direct access for other adult guests. Children staying on adult floors also enjoy common areas and children’s activities.
Your stay includes:
- A private room with a bathroom, microwave, mini-fridge and television
- One free parking space

- Laundry facilities, open 24 hours a day
- Activity rooms
- A rooftop natural space, the George and Janet Boldt Healing Garden
- The Silver Family Children’s Park, a rooftop playground for children of all mobilities

Screening
Before your stay, you will be asked questions about substance use, criminal record and other issues so we can protect the safety of guests.
Doernbecher patients and their families
Families with children being treated at OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital pay nothing. The costs are covered by Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oregon & SW Washington.

You need to:
- Have a child 21 or younger. Or you are expecting a baby due within two weeks who will get treatment, and you have a fetal therapy letter from a provider.
- Live more than 50 miles from the hospital providing care.
- Not have anyone in your group with a contagious illness.
- Be able to stay in a community setting without needing help.
- If you are younger than 18 and the parent of a patient, you are joined by your own parent or guardian. In some cases, another relative older than 25 can join you instead.
- You can make a reservation to stay up to three months. Longer stays are considered, depending on availability.
- You can check in up to one day before the appointment.
- You can reserve a room up to 30 days in advance.
- Patients who aren’t in the hospital must have appointments no more than two days apart.

OHSU adult patients
Our nightly rate is $50. Funding is available for qualified patients. No charge for those with Medicaid.
You need to:
- Be at least 21.
- Live more than 50 miles from Portland.
- Be able to stay at least three nights based on medical need and on verified appointments no more than 48 hours apart.
- Be able to stay in a community setting without needing help, or have a caregiver with you.
- Not have anyone in your group with a contagious illness.
- Be able to pay $50 a night or be screened for financial help. (No charge for those with Medicaid)
Additional criteria:
- You do not qualify to stay the night before an appointment if you can reach it on time by leaving home at 5 a.m. or later.
- You do not qualify to stay the night after an appointment or hospital stay if you can reach home by 9 p.m.
- Appointments must be at an OHSU Marquam Hill or OHSU South Waterfront clinic.
- You can make a reservation to stay up to three months. Longer stays are considered, depending on availability.
- You can reserve a room up to 45 days in advance.
- The patient must stay in the guest house for a caregiver/relative to stay. If the patient is unexpectedly readmitted to the hospital, the caregiver/relative can stay up to two nights alone for a $50 nightly fee.

About the Rood Family Pavilion
The $32 million Gary and Christine Rood Family Pavilion was built entirely through the generosity of donors, including a $12 million gift from Gary and Christine Rood of Vancouver, Washington. More than 1,900 donors from Oregon, Washington and states across the U.S. contributed.
