Pediatric and Neonatal Transport (PANDA)

A Life Flight Network helicopter sits on the helipad atop OHSU Hospital.

The Pediatric and Neonatal Doernbecher Transport Team moves critically ill or injured children by air or ground to OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.

Our goal is to stabilize your patient to return to your hospital.

To request a pediatric or neonatal transport, call OHSU’s Emergency Communications Center at 503-494-7520 or 888-66PANDA (667-2632).

Our team, called the PANDA Team, has nearly 20 registered nurses and respiratory therapists. They:

  • Have experience in pediatric and neonatal intensive care
  • Can provide resuscitation and other emergency care in an aircraft or ambulance
  • Work closely with EMTs from our transport partners

PANDA is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems.

When you call

When you request a transport, we’ll connect you with a specialist in pediatric or neonatal intensive care. They will ask about your patient’s:

  • Diagnosis, symptoms and vital signs
  • Treatment
  • Labs and imaging
  • Need for surgery or blood products

We respond to requests based on:

  • Patient condition
  • Aircraft or ambulance availability
  • Weather
  • Travel time
  • Other transport options

How a transport works

Once we accept a transport request, our team members leave within 15 minutes. Each transport includes a registered nurse, a respiratory therapist and an EMT.  They keep in touch with a Doernbecher physician experienced in pediatric transport and critical care.

We use a pediatric ambulance and FAA-certified planes and helicopters.

When we arrive at Doernbecher, specialists meet your patient. An operating room is ready if needed.

You will receive an update on your patient within 24 hours of their arrival.

A member of the pediatric and neonatal transport team at OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital sits in the back of an ambulance with Davis the golden retriever. Another team member stands next to the ambulance. A toy panda and toy golden retriever sit in front of Davis.
Members of the PANDA team pose with Davis, a facility dog at OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. The team gives a stuffed panda to each child they transport.
