2025 Sommer Memorial Lectures and OHSU Scientific Session

Conference description

The Sommer Memorial Lectures are made possible by a perpetual trust established by the late Dr. Ernst A. Sommer with United States National Bank of Oregon. The lectures are open, without charge, to all members of the medical profession and to students attending accredited medical schools. The Sommer Lectures have brought to Portland more than 250 distinguished speakers from the United States and other countries since 1941 when the programs were inaugurated.

Robert Martindale, MD, PhD

Dr. Robert Martindale joined OHSU in May 2005. He is currently Professor of Surgery and served as head of the Division of General Surgery from 2005 - 2019. He also serves as the Medical Director for Hospital Nutrition Services. He is board certified in General Surgery with special clinical interest in abdominal wall reconstruction and surgical nutrition and metabolism.

Dr. Martindale completed his medical training at George Washington University in Washington DC and his surgical residency at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, WA. He obtained his PhD in Nutrition at UCLA, in the laboratories of Drs. Morton Grossman, Tachi Yamada, and Seymour Levin at the Center for Ulcer Research and Education.

Victor M. Montori, MD, MSc

Victor M. Montori, MD, MSc is a highly accomplished physician, researcher, and care activist, with a long and distinguished career. He is passionate about patient-centered, relationship-based primary care for patients with chronic conditions. He is currently the Robert H. and Susan M. Rewoldt Professor in Endocrinology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, a 2024-2025 Human Rights and Technology Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School, and the chair of the board of The Patient Revolution.

Born in Lima, Perú, Dr. Montori completed his medical degree in Perú and his postgraduate medical and research education at Mayo Clinic and at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. He joined the staff of Mayo Clinic in 2002. Since then, he has taken care of patients with diabetes, obesity, and other metabolic disorders as a consultant in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, Metabolism and Nutrition in the Department of Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Alex Smith, MD, MS, MPH

Alex Smith was born in Hawaii, however, his parents sadly moved to Michigan when he was 6 months old.  Dr. Smith studied biology at the University of Michigan, attended medical school in a joint program between the UC Berkeley and UCSF.  He completed residency in Internal Medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, followed by two fellowships in Boston: one in palliative care and the second in clinical research, including an MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health.  Dr. Smith has been a faculty member in the UCSF Division of Geriatrics since 2008. 

Dr. Smith studies prognosis, communication, and enjoys mentoring the next generation of researchers. Dr. Smith is co-host of the GeriPal podcast, an influential geriatrics and palliative care podcast, and is co-founder of ePrognosis, an online compendium of prognostic calculators.  Dr. Smith serves as Executive Editor at the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
