A biopsy is a sample of tissue taken from the body to look at under a microscope to help doctors diagnose conditions on or in the body that may appear abnormal.  

During a skin biopsy, your provider will perform a “punch” biopsy or a “shave” biopsy. Additionally, some moles and unusual growths can be excised (cut) and that tissue can be looked at under the microscope to make sure all unusual cells have been removed. Dermatopathologists are the doctors who have received special training to read biopsies.
