As a mother who is breastfeeding, you may want to consider milk donation for other babies in need. It is an opportunity to make a difference in the health of a premature or medically fragile infant.

Donor breast milk is an important part of medical care for at-risk infants whose own mothers cannot supply enough milk.

Our certified lactation consultants can help answer your questions about becoming a breast milk donor.

Our personnel at OHSU Family Medicine at Gabriel Park will assist you to send your precious milk to Northwest Mothers Milk Bank, where it will be processed, pasteurized and distributed to infants who will benefit from it.

1. Determine if breast milk donation is right for you by visiting www.donatemilk.org.

We are available to talk with you and answer your questions about whether milk donation is right for you.

2. Participate in a telephone screening

If you meet the qualifications of the preliminary donor screening process then call Northwest Mothers Milk Bank 503-469-0955 for a brief verbal medical history review. They will explain how to obtain additional information, consent forms, and instructions to have a blood test (The Mothers Milk Bank covers the cost of the serological screening).

3. Arrange a time to deliver your frozen breast milk

Once you get your donor identification number from the milk bank then contact OHSU Family Medicine at Gabriel Park at 503-494-9992 to make arrangements to drop off your milk. Donor drop offs must be prearranged to ensure timely shipping. Our drop off site will package and prepare the boxes necessary for transporting your breast milk to the milk bank. Our donor drop off time is Thursdays from 9:30 am to noon.
