College Undergraduate and Graduate Biomedical Informatics and Data Science Internship Program

Summer 2025 Application

The application deadline is February 16, 2025. Candidates will be notified on or before March 21, 2025 regarding final decisions.

The Department of Medical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology (DMICE) will be hosting its College Undergraduate and Graduate Biomedical Informatics and Data Science Internship Program again in the summer of 2025.  These internships provide full-time experiences in biomedical informatics and data science to college undergraduates to increase their knowledge and skills in these areas.  The program’s goals are to provide exposure to biomedical informatics and data science with respect to best practices, impact of research on medicine and health, as well as possible graduate study and career paths.  In addition to  participation in a faculty-led research project, the experience will include:

  • Knowledge of the motivations, activities, and challenges for biomedical informatics and data science
  • Skills development in data science through the use of standard data sets and tools
  • Training in responsible conduct of research
  • Student-led and faculty-facilitated health data ethics and equity seminar

In addition to carrying out research projects under the supervision of a faculty mentor, summer interns will participate in weekly didactic classes, participate in a health data ethics and equity seminar, and attend a weekly informatics research conference.

The overarching goal of this summer program is to support educational activities and encourages applications from individuals with diverse background--including those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences--to pursue further studies or careers in research.” Please note that NIH interprets this phrase broadly: that is, NIH generally defines “individuals from diverse backgrounds” broadly to capture to all dimensions of diversity (e.g., educational background, geography, area of scientific interest, etc.).  Thus, the language is intended to mean that the program is open to a wide array of students (underrepresented or not), of which students from underrepresented groups are included.

This College Undergraduate and Graduate Biomedical Informatics and Data Science Internship Program is funded by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH):

Due to the funding agency requirements, this program is open to U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents only. Some of the positions are funded by a program from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) (started in 2022) to enhance diversity in biomedical informatics and data science. A video from the NLM (Patti Brennan is now former head of the NLM) highlights the NLM view of the program.

Short term experience – summer quarter. 40 hours per week for 10-12 weeks, starting Monday, June 16, 2025 and interns will be paid Oregon Minimum Wage per hour. Open to undergraduate and graduate students.
