OHSU Annual Update in Clinical Informatics

Update in Clinical Informatics

Due to strategic alignment at OHSU the next iteration of the Annual Update course will be offered in 2025.

Online continuing education from the OHSU Department of Medical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology

Each year, a selection of important topics is covered to provide an update for clinical informatics informatics and others interested in the field.  For physicians, the course provides continuing medical education (CME) credit. For physicians certified in the clinical informatics subspecialty and several other clinical specialties (see list below), the course provides MOC-II/LLSA credits.

The course will be available on OHSU's online learning platform (Sakai) as a virtual course featuring enduring material.

Credits submitted for CME/MOC are issued quarterly.

Activity fee

  • For those seeking ONLY the course Certificate of Completion - $125
  • For clinicians seeking continuing medical education (CME) credit (nursing credit not available)- $250
  • For physicians seeking CME and Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment (LLSA) credits towards the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) Maintenance of Certification Part II (MOC-II) requirements for the Clinical Informatics Subspecialty - $250

Course information

The annual update consists of modules that are estimated to take a total of 7 hours to complete. The learning activity is completely online, and consists of lectures and self-assessment quizzes. The topics for the annual update were selected by DMICE faculty. Topics for future annual updates will be chosen with input from those who completed previous annual update courses.

Faculty

The OHSU course faculty will include:

William Hersh, MD, Chair, Department of Medical Informatics & Clinical Epidemiology

Vishnu Mohan, MD, MBI, Program Director OHSU Clinical Informatics Fellowship and Faculty, Department of Medical Informatics & Clinical Epidemiology

and other experts from OHSU.

Learning objectives and topics

After taking this learning activity, health IT professionals will be able to

(1) be aware of current advances in clinical informatics;
(2) apply these advances to their professional practice; and
(3) meet required competencies that are related to the domain of clinical informatics in the practice of their profession.

The activity will consist of talks given by DMICE faculty that will focus on recent developments in biomedical informatics. The activity will be hosted on OHSU’s Sakai learning management system as enduring learning material. Once learners enroll in the activity, they will have access to Sakai and be able to complete the activity and evaluations at their own pace. Each talk will be accompanied by a post-talk quiz (multiple choice), and learners will also need to complete a course evaluation at the end of their learning. To receive a certificate, the course activities and course evaluation must be completed.

The topics covered in this year’s offering of the course include:

  • Operational Clinical Informatics
  • Cyber Security for Healthcare Professionals
  • Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence
  • Telemedicine and Telehealth
  • COVID-19 and Informatics
  • Bioinformatics for the Clinical Informatician
  • Analytics in Clinical Informatics

Registration and enrollment

Registration is a two-step process: learners will first register via a web link and then transfer to another website to pay for the course.  Course access instructions will be emailed to learners after completing the registration process.

Visa, MasterCard and American Express are the only credit cards accepted.

OHSU Annual Update In Clinical Informatics Registration and Payment  (link will be ready in next course)

After registration, participants will be sent login information to the OHSU Sakai Learning Management System. After completing all of the modules and the self-assessment quizzes, each participant will need to complete the evaluation form, and will then be sent a PDF Certificate of Completion via email. Clinicians who wish to get continuing medical education credits will additionally be sent certifications for CME.  We will send information on physicians who have successfully achieved Clinical Informatics MOC-II credits to the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM).

Within the Sakai system, each module will provide an overview of learning objectives, one or more lecture segments (in MP4 format, viewable on both computers and mobile devices), optional additional materials, and a self-assessment quiz of 5-10 multiple-choice questions. (Those seeking 7 CME or MOC-II credit must achieve a correct rate of 70% to pass. Each quiz can be taken up to 5 times.)
