PGY1 Pharmacy

Welcome message from the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program Director

Congratulations! Your hard work and perseverance have taken you this far in your career - that is commendable and should be celebrated. At Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), we welcome you to extend your journey of professional and personal growth with us.

As a past OHSU PGY1 and PGY2 resident, I am grateful for my training at OHSU and hope to give back to the program 100 times over what it has given me.

Established in 1988, the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at OHSU Health has a long history of developing outstanding pharmacist clinicians and leaders. The PGY1 program prides itself in offering a clinically focused but well-rounded residency training program. To be competent pharmacists, we feel residents must not only learn clinical, analytical, and problem-solving skills but also learn and appreciate the operational complexities of a healthcare system. As such, our residents have learning experiences in pharmacy operations, administration and leadership, drug policy, medication safety, and informatics. On the clinical front, residents staff as decentralized clinical pharmacists in one of the many patient care areas (i.e. medicine, surgery, cardiology, pediatrics, or critical care). As a pharmacy enterprise, we offer rotations that run the gamut from intensive care units to specialized clinics and extends to both adult and pediatric populations.

OHSU is a progressive institution in a progressive state. The pharmacy department is viewed as a valued player in the institution’s ecosystem and our contributions extend beyond the clinical arenas. We have been privileged to be early adopters of clinical practices, technologies, and pharmacy advancement initiatives. Pharmacists are well integrated into the medical team and work alongside our medical colleagues on the floors and in the clinic spaces. With credentialing and privileging of pharmacists, collaborative practices and pharmacy managed protocols, our pharmacists are practicing at the top of their license to push the scope of pharmacy practice and services.

Every resident is different and therefore their journeys, unique. The design of the resident’s year is a collaborative effort and a fluid process. The schedule is a living document that grows and changes as the resident grows and changes. Your wellness, physical and mental, is important to us and we continue to explore opportunities for respite so that you can achieve your goals. It is our goal to support you through this challenging but rewarding year. At the end, we hope you leave with the attitude and skills necessary to be a competent and compassionate individual inside and outside the profession.

We appreciate your interest in OHSU Health and look forward to hearing from you.
