Utrasound - Course Information: Typical Schedule
Day 1
10:00am - Introduction, ultrasound physics and knobology – Didactic
An introduction to the physics of diagnostic ultrasonography and how to adjust parameters on the ultrasound machine to optimize image quality.
11:00am - Machine orientation – Lab
Hands-on proctored orientation to the ultrasound machine.
11:30am - Vascular – Didactic
Discussion of the use of ultrasound to guide vascular access.
12:30pm - Lunch
1:30pm - Vascular – Lab
Proctored practice of identifying vessels for ultrasound guided vascular access on human models. Phantom models will be used for actual needle placement, foreign body localization and abscess identification.
2:30pm - Trauma ultrasound – Didactic
Discussion of when and how the Focused Abdominal Sonography for Trauma (FAST) exam should be performed and its limitations.
3:30pm - Trauma – Lab
Proctored practice of the FAST exam on human models.
4:30pm - Abdomen review – Interactive
5:30pm - Adjourn
Day 2
9:00am - AAA – Didactic
Discussion of the ultrasound exam of the abdomen to assess for abdominal aortic aneurysm.
10:00am - AAA – Lab
Proctored practice of the abdominal aortic aneurysm exam.
11:00am - Pelvic ultrasound – Didactic
Discussion of how transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound can be used to identify and assess first trimester intrauterine pregnancy in situations of potential ectopic pregnancy and threatened miscarriage.
12:00pm - Lunch
1:00pm - Pelvic – Lab
Proctored practice of the transabdominal and transvaginal exams on human models. Extra time is provided
2:00pm - Procedural ultrasound and miscellaneous – Didactic
Discussion of the use of ultrasound to guide various emergency department procedures such as pericardiocentesis, thoracentesis and paracentesis. Other miscellaneous uses of ultrasound such as guiding codes/cardiac, differentiating abscesses from cellulitis and identifying foreign bodies will also be covered.
3:00pm - Quiz
Answers to be discussed together by the group and instructors.
3:25pm - Program development: credentialing, CQI, etc. – Didactic
3:50pm - Procedural ultrasound and miscellaneous – Lab
