Mission and Program Aims

Mission

The mission of the OHSU Allergy and Immunology Fellowship Program is to prepare specialists in the delivery of skilled medical and consultative care to patients with allergic and immunologic disorders ranging from hypersensitivity to deficiency to dysregulation disorders of the immune response. The graduating fellow will achieve the ability to formulate and carry out appropriate diagnostic and medical plans. The length of this educational program is 24 months of full-time education. During this time, trainees will receive education in both pediatric and adult allergic and immunologic disorders, and cross-training and experience with both inpatients and outpatients. The A/I fellow will be expected to assume greater responsibility as their skills and experience increase in each area during the training program.

Program Aims

1. The Allergy/Immunology specialist will serve as a clinician, educator and researcher in conditions such as asthma, allergic diseases, immune disorders and immune deficiency. The Allergy/Immunology specialist will be able to collaborate with other physician scientists and translational scientists. The training program will provide state-of-the-art clinical training in Allergy and Immunology.

2. The Allergy/Immunology training program will offer the opportunity to work with a range of specialties. Physicians and scientists who have committed to participate in this program include specialists in the following medical specialties: pulmonary medicine, dermatology, infectious disease, rheumatology, otolaryngology, gastroenterology, nutrition, hematology and oncology.

3. The Allergy/Immunology fellow will develop a solid foundation in basic immunology and will be able to apply principles to managing clinical conditions. On completion of fellowship training, the physician will be eligible to sit for the Board Certification Exam of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology.

4. The Allergy/Immunology training program will strive to train individuals who in turn want to train others in the field of Allergy/Immunology. This program will work to produce an Allergy/Immunology specialist who will not only excel in patient care skills and diagnostic acumen but will also know how to apply critical thinking skills to be able to ask and begin to solve clinical and translational research questions. They will learn how to approach areas of investigation, seek out funding opportunities for their interests, and learn how to write and publish their work. A/I fellows who succeed in these goals will be positioned for a career in academic medicine and clinical practice.
