Simulation Curriculum

We have been building our simulation curriculum over the past 3 years and now have a robust set of hands on, high-fidelity simulations for our fellows to participate in. We provide 2-4 hour blocks of protected time throughout the year to facilitate fellow participation in simulation. Our introductory bootcamp for first year fellows also has a focus on hands on simulation.

First Year Bootcamp Simulation Curriculum

1. Percutaneous simulation

  • Includes central line, arterial line, thoracenteses, paracenteses, chest tubes and rapid infusion catheter placements

2. Difficult Airway Part I/OORAM Training

  • Uses multiple stations with real life mannequins to get practice with intubation and the equipment available at OHSU and the VA

3. Bronchoscopy with bronchial blocker placement

4. QI Simulation

  • Error identification in a simulated ICU patient room

5. Massive Transfusion Protocol Simulation

  • Work closely with our ICU nurses and navigate in our simulated hospital how to run and manage an MTP in an actively hemorrhaging patient. Also learn how to set up and manage the Belmont rapid infuser.

6. Ventilator Simulation

  • An introductory simulation to review ventilator modes and how to navigate the Hamilton G5 ventilators

  • Real life scenarios programmed into our mannequin Hal, who replicates severe obstructive lung disease, restrictive lung disease and normal lungs.

7. Code Blue Simulation

  • Work closely with our RRT nurses, MICU nurses and RTs while you run various code blue simulations

Annual Simulation Curriculum

  1. Bronchoscopy and EBUS simulation – twice per year

  • Uses our bronchoscopy simulator, games to focus on bronchial anatomy, Grab that Foreign Body game, our EBUS simulator and real case examples to focus on staging and procedural approach to lung cancer

  1. Moderate and Deep Sedation

  • Case scenarios to guide management in both moderate and deep sedation in the inpatient and outpatient setting

  1. Chest Tube Placement (percutaneous and surgical)

  • Uses the high fidelity device developed by our simulation center experts to allow for 8 stations using materials that facilitate life like pleura to access in addition to using pork ribs for tissue

  1. Difficult Airway Part II

  • Focus on direct, video, fiberoptic and retrograde intubation options

  1. Massive Transfusion Protocol

  • Work closely with our ICU nurses and navigate in our simulated hospital how to run and manage an MTP in an actively hemorrhaging patient. Also learn how to set up and manage the Belmont rapid infuser.

  1. ECMO Cannulation & Management

  • Practice cannulation using our specialized ECMO mannequin, Mario

  • Review various ECMO emergencies and how to manage them

  1. Percutaneous Tracheostomy

  • Reviews basic techniques and procedures with hands on practice for how to do a percutaneous tracheostomy. Also review how to manage basic trach emergencies.

  1. Minnesota Tube, TVP and Pericardiocentesis

  • High fidelity mannequin for practicing Minnesota tube placement during active hemorrhage as well as simulators for TVP placement and pericardiocentesis.

  1. Ventilator Simulations

  • Advanced ventilator management and waveform interpretation that builds on itself throughout the year. Curriculum repeated annually.
