Career development for learners and postdocs

One-on-one career coaching helps you be more successful in managing your career success and satisfaction.

Mentorship and career design resources and tools

Mentorship Academy, a training that provides mentors with an intellectual framework, an opportunity to experiment with various methods, and a forum in which to solve mentoring dilemmas with the help of their peers. Open to all faculty, staff, and post docs interested in accelerating the process of becoming an effective mentor.

Mentorship SharePoint Site, access asynchronous resources and training to build new mentoring skills, learn how to navigate and improve your mentoring relationships, and learn how to implement an effective mentorship program.

The Career Development SharePoint site provides comprehensive support to help learners and educators achieve their career goals. We include a variety of tools and resources, interactive workshops, personalized consultations, and coaching sessions. We are here to support students, postdocs, faculty, and staff in their professional growth and success. Our SharePoint site features materials such as career development resources, a calendar of events, and easy-to-access links for scheduling one-on-one appointments.

Life Design for Learners is an engaging asynchronous course that empowers you to take control of your academic and career journey. Using design-thinking principles and our own Career Development Framework, this course guides you through four modules to:

  • Identify your values, interests, and strengths
  • Explore career possibilities
  • Develop meaningful relationships
  • Effectively engage in your chosen path

This course features a comprehensive Resource Library, offering tools and guidance on job applications, networking strategies, work-life wellness, reflection tools, and much more to support your personal and professional growth. Learn at your own pace and gain the tools to create a fulfilling and purpose-driven future.

Greenhouse is your OHSU-exclusive platform for building meaningful professional connections and expanding your career network. Designed to support mentoring and career growth, Greenhouse offers opportunities to connect with peers, mentors, and industry professionals. Use it to find guidance, share expertise, and foster collaborations that drive your career forward.

StandOut is an innovative mock interview tool that helps you prepare for interviews with confidence. Practice answering common and industry-specific questions in a realistic virtual environment, receive personalized feedback, and refine your responses to make a lasting impression.

Workshops and trainings

Education mission community members may request workshops on various mentoring and career development topics.

Mentoring

  • Mentorship Academy, a training for mentors (faculty, postdocs, and staff) to develop their mentoring competencies
  • Mentoring Up, a training for mentees (grad students, postdocs, trainees, residents). In this training series, mentees will develop the knowledge and skills to proactively and effectively address these challenges and navigate their mentoring relationships and career progression. Topics addressed include:
    • Maintaining effective communication
    • Aligning expectations
    • Seeking professional development
  • Building Your Mentoring Network workshop: participants will assess mentoring needs, learn about the different mentoring archetypes, brainstorm how to find effective mentors and learn to craft a bounded ask
  • Cultivate a Culture Mentorship: attendees will learn broad mentorship frameworks and article the five steps needed to build an effective mentorship program

Community of Practice

Culturally Aware Mentorship Seed: Ever wondered what lies beyond mentorship training? Are you interested in joining a community of practice that centers self-reflection, commitment to intentionality, and cultural humility?

Join a vibrant community of peers who have navigated culturally responsive mentorship and are eager to delve into the nuanced landscapes of equitable mentoring practices. If you're interested in joining, register to receive invites.

Educator Success Grants

Grants for additional training to support mentoring, career development, and educator skills.

Apply for a grant for additional training to support mentoring, career development, leadership, and education research and teaching skills.

Educator Career Success Grants are awarded two times/year (Winter and Summer). These grants are only open to educators (faculty and education mission staff). Details:

  • Maximum of one $3000 grant per candidate each fiscal year.
  • A one-to-one match from the department or from applicant’s personal funds is required.
  • The grant may not be used for credit-bearing courses toward a degree.
  • For ideas on courses, seminars, workshops, and other opportunities that may be grant eligible, you can refer to the Educator Career Success Grant Program Guide.

Annual timeline

Spring/Summer Cycle:

  • Application Open Feb/March/April
  • Application due April 30
  • Announce awardees by May 30
  • Grant can be used entire upcoming fiscal year

Fall/Winter Cycle:

  • Application Open September/October/November
  • Application due November 30
  • Announce awardees by December 30
  • Ideally to be used for trainings in January through June

Evaluation of applications

Proposals will be reviewed and evaluated with the grant rubric based on:

  • Completion of application materials
  • Benefits to applicant’s professional development and impact on community engagement
  • Budget information
  • Mentorship alignment

Internships in higher ed career development (Year-round and summer)

Internship opportunities for folks who are working toward careers in higher ed, career development, faculty development, assessment, and education research.
